Pearl Harbor – Virtual Reality Teaching Resources

Pearl Harbor. Sunday, December 7th 1941. In the words of President Franklin Roosevelt, this is a day that will “live in infamy”.

Up to this point, the United States had not entered World War Two, trying to maintain distance from the fighting and keep their troops out of the conflict. However, a sudden surprise attack by Japan on this important American naval base forced President Roosevelt’s hand and pushed America into the fight, changing the course of the war forever.

Using Virtual Reality to Experience Pearl Harbour

Why did the Japanese target the U.S.S. Arizona? What was the U.S.S. Arizona’s mission? Why did America enter World War Two? These are just a few of the questions that children may usually struggle with… But by transporting your students into the lesson with VR, they can experience and understand the events of Pearl Harbor like never before.

Using our explorable Avantis World scene, students can venture back to the 20th century and explore Pearl Harbor moments before the attack. From investigating the U.S.S. Arizona to witnessing the incoming bombers, they can truly empathise with this important moment in history.

Lesson Guides for Teaching Pearl Harbour

As you’re delivering your history lesson and your students are exploring the Pearl Harbor scene, it’s important they’re getting the most out of the learning experience. You can guide the lesson by asking the following questions:

  1. What caused the attack of Pearl Harbor?
  2. What events occurred during the attack on Pearl Harbor?
  3. What was impact of the events at Pearl Harbor?
  4. Why do you think Pearl Harbour was so important to the United States?

To get started, simply search for ‘Pearl Harbor’ in the ClassVR portal or visit Trip Through Time Land in Avantis World – and let the exploration begin.

TOP TIP: Why not immerse your class in other key moments throughout history by exploring Trip Through Time Land!
